Rapid Prototypes
A rapid prototype is a prototype created using rapid prototyping technology. Rapid prototyping is the creation of physical 3d objects from 3d model graphics. Using solid freeform fabrication, RP are utilized in a wide range of applications and at times used to manufacture production quality parts in relatively small numbers.
With additive fabrication, the machine forwards data from cad drawings and lays successive layers of liquid, powder, or sheet material building the model from the ground up. The layers which correspond to the virtual cross sections from the cad file are joined together (fused) to create the final shape.
The standard data file produced by cad software for the machines is the stl file. The stl file approximates the shape of the part or assembly.
